| Eva’s mobile review – Taxi… hey taxi… please.. | ||||||
| By Eva, July 30th, 2007 :: Apps & Sites | ||||||
This excellent and very practical service recently changed names from Cabbies.mobi to Taxicab.mobi. I kind of liked the old one. Anyway back to the subject. This service works in 3 countries and any who ready my reviews know that I like that… Taxicab.mobi works in the USA, Canada and the UK.
And here for the UK :
As you can see the UK based service is more refined as in Canada and the USA it is info taken from Google. I hope that you guys will keep up the good work and get to fill out your database. The service is useful because you can click on the numbers and make your call directly. What would be really great though is if the service allowed you to link directly to the Taxi companies mobile site so that you can reserve online.. for example while in a meeting or while having a pee.. lol. Maybe that can even be a business model.. for every click that is sent their way you can charge them. —————–

| Eva’s mobile review – Preview your CDs before buying… | ||||||
| By Eva, July 30th, 2007 :: Apps & Sites | ||||||
This is definitely a cool site.. whenever you want to buy a CD you just enter the UPC (the number code that exists on every CD) and your get a preview of the album with 3 excerpts from the CD.
Once you enter your UPC you get this :
By the way I recommend this great album… Of course as CD purchases are dwindling.. you may wonder whether this will be of long term use. I can’t answer that but this is sure handy right now when you are in a small music store that doesn’t have listen stations or on the road and stop off at a gas station… for example. The site in general is clean and toned down. In just two pages you get to your album and then you can choose a song. Of course I hope you have a good data plan.. because if not you will end up paying more than the worth of the album. What would really be cool is if they went the extra mile and had reviews of the albums. Now that would very nice… hint, hint —————–

| KPN goes the same way as O2 and Telstra.. imode is not in style anymore! | ||||||
| By Shaun Zelber, July 23rd, 2007 :: News & Events, OS & Handsets | ||||||
Well I guess that this was to be expected KPN too has decided to discontinue their imode portal. Each telco has done it differently.. KPN opts for the slow death as can be seen in their note to their content partners : Dear Content Partner,
We would like to inform you on our future i-mode policy. Mobile internet has developed rapidly. KPN adapts to these developments and improved their WAP offering based on market needs. The current WAP environment is comparable with the i-mode portal. At the introduction in 2002 i-mode was a revolutionary service. Advanced services combined with devices containing colorscreens and camaras at that time not known to the market. Currently almost every handset is internet capable and more and more attractive services and sites are available. Internet on your mobile is now common good. The current i-mode services for our existing customers will be continued. Best regards, This is the end of an era for users and for the particular ecosystem that imode brought. hopefully the telcos will learn the best things from imode namely the unlimited data plans and the open environment that has allowed of deck sites to flourish in the imode ecosystems worldwide. —————–

| Eva’s mobile review – Johny.. as in the john.. the loo.. | ||||||
| By Eva, July 23rd, 2007 :: Apps & Sites | ||||||
I had a good laugh with this one… I mean it is true that when we go to the toilet we have time to kill. Now what do we do when we don’t have a good girlie magazine ? Well we fiddle with our phone and play a game, send SMS or browse. Well Johny.mobi is based on the premise that they will find cool stuff and put it on their site for us..
The site needs to be filled up with more content but the idea is original and funny. Even the logo has got style. Keep up the good work guys. —————–

| After O2 UK… Now Telstra abandons imode | ||||||
| By Shaun Zelber, July 19th, 2007 :: News & Events | ||||||
After earlier this week O2 announcing that they are dropping imode now it is the turn of Telstra of Australia to announce that they are phasing out imode before the end of the year.
NTT DoCoMo’s overseas imode adventure is drawing to a close it seems. The only way that the tendency could be reversed is by make major acquisitions. And we all know that this could only really happen in developing markets without breaking the bank. In fact in terms of strategy that is a pretty good idea because imode meet with such success in Japan in part due to low internet penetration. This is the case today in many developing countries. So it might be the only growth strategy left for NTT DoCoMo. —————–

| IP Mobile is a NEW BUSINESS | ||||||
| By Shaun Zelber, July 18th, 2007 :: Apps & Sites | ||||||
“NextWave, through its IPWireless subsidiary, is a leading global supplier of TD-CDMA wireless broadband products and networks. Our investment is aimed at helping IPMobile accelerate its deployment of this powerful 4G wireless broadband technology before the end of this year in Japan, one of the most advanced telecommunications markets in the world,” said Allen Salmasi, chairman and chief executive officer of NextWave Wireless. “The 2 GHz spectrum allocated to IPMobile by MIC specifically calls for the deployment of TD-CDMA technology in Japan. We intend to help IPMobile implement one of the first 4G wireless broadband network deployments that can provide speeds of up to 30 Mbps and support a wide variety of user applications including bandwidth-intensive video streaming applications.” Founded in 2002, IPMobile received a nationwide concession of spectrum in the 2 GHz frequency band from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in November 2005. IPMobile has been working with IPWireless towards a commercial launch of a TD-CDMA wireless broadband network by November of this year. “After the launch of IPMobile’s commercial network later this year, we look forward to following up with world-class companies in Japan to invest in the future of IPMobile’s business in order to bring new and exciting mass-consumer devices and applications to Japan’s marketplace and to extend Japan’s global leadership in wireless broadband services and technologies,”

| Eva’s mobile review – Canines.mobi – It’s a dog eat dog world… | ||||||
| By Eva, July 18th, 2007 :: Apps & Sites | ||||||
Well this site definitely has content and lots of it. I would even say that the texts are a bit long. Nevertheless it is highly informative and useful for dog lovers and dog breeders. On the homepage you get the main news items which renew fairly frequently… Which is nice because lots of mobile sites seem to be just empty husks.. with no real people behind it.
Generally this a great site that people who love dogs will love. What would be cool is if there were pictures of the races and breeds of dogs. To avoid crashing the phones that have a hard time managing pictures of those that wish to keep their data bills down (please mobile telcos of the world… can you take this as a hint to make unlimited data plans!!!!) the images could be just links that you click on. —————–

| O2 dropping imode | ||||||
| By Shaun Zelber, July 17th, 2007 :: News & Events | ||||||
O2 UK confirms that they will be phasing out imode in the UK.
Here is their brief statement : “O2-UK (this does not apply to O2 Ireland) will continue to support i-mode for the next 2 years. However, as part of a regular strategic review we will not launch any new i-mode handsets from July 2007. We will still sell existing i-mode handset models. The service has proven to be successful with rich content and high satisfaction amongst users. However, a limited range of devices has restricted its growth and we don’t see that changing. This environment is being supported by an increasing number of feature-rich devices and tariffs accessing richer content at faster speeds. I-mode is part of the evolution of the mobile Internet but not the end point. We will continue to manage and serve any existing UK i-mode customers until July 2009.”
This was in the works for sometime now. This is needless to say a big blow to the imode alliance because O2 is part of Telefonica which has O2 Ireland, O2 Germany and O2 UK. —————–

| Vodafone rebels win support in US | ||||||
| By Shaun Zelber, July 16th, 2007 :: News & Events | ||||||
Rebel Vodafone shareholders demanding a shake up of the operator’s capital structure are understood to have made some headway with their demands in the US. US-based shareholder advisory group, Glass Lewis, is believed to have recommended that US investors in Vodafone lend their backing to the majority of the proposals submitted by activist investment group Efficient Capital Structures (ECS). “” The move comes as the deadline for the carrier’s annual meeting approaches. Vodafone is required to put the resolutions to its shareholders at its forthcoming AGM on July 24. ECS, which is backed John Mayo, former deputy chief executive of Marconi, claims that the carrier’s shares have performed badly over recent years and contends that the operator’s market valuation does not reflect the real underlying value of the company. The resolutions, if passed, would give Vodafone investors bonds worth £34bn and would see the spin off of the carrier’s 45 per cent interest in Verizon Wireless. About a third of Vodafone’s shareholders are understood to be based in the US, with a vast majority subscribing to Glass Lewis. However, in the UK, the proposals have met with mixed reactions. Some question the credibility and motives of ECS, specifically those of one of the firm’s key backers John Mayo, former deputy chief executive of Marconi. It was Mayo after all, who decided to load up GEC-Marconi with debt, flog its cashcow defence interests and hand out the cash pile to the shareholders.
