Well I guess that this was to be expected KPN too has decided to discontinue their imode portal. Each telco has done it differently.. KPN opts for the slow death as can be seen in their note to their content partners :

Dear Content Partner,
We would like to inform you on our future i-mode policy.

Mobile internet has developed rapidly. KPN adapts to these developments and improved their WAP offering based on market needs. The current WAP environment is comparable with the i-mode portal. At the introduction in 2002 i-mode was a revolutionary service. Advanced services combined with devices containing colorscreens and camaras at that time not known to the market. Currently almost every handset is internet capable and more and more attractive services and sites are available. Internet on your mobile is now common good. Given these developments and the high level possibilities of today’s WAP handsets, KPN decided not to source new i-mode handsets.

The current i-mode services for our existing customers will be continued.

Best regards,

This is the end of an era for users and for the particular ecosystem that imode brought. hopefully the telcos will learn the best things from imode namely the unlimited data plans and the open environment that has allowed of deck sites to flourish in the imode ecosystems worldwide.
